The hosts of "The View" began their show Monday addressing the trio of horrifying events that occurred over the weekend: the killings of director Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Reiner, as well as the fatal shootings at Sydney's Bondi Beach on the first night of Hanukkah and Brown University.
"There was so much tragedy this weekend, it's hard to process," said Whoopi Goldberg, who Reiner directed in the 1996 drama "Ghosts of Mississippi." On Sunday, the Reiners, who wed in 1989, were discovered dead in their Brentwood home. Police arrested their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, and have called him "responsible for their deaths."
After listing some of the filmmaker’s credits, which include "The Princess Bride," "A Few Good Men" and "When Harry Met Sally …," Goldberg added that Reiner "was also an outspoken activist and quite a guy, quite an amazing man."
Goldberg shared on the Dec. 15 episode that she reunited with her friend in 2007 when Billy Crystal, who starred in "When Harry Met Sally" with Meg Ryan, received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
"We were together quite a bit, and he was a wonderful director and a guy who was a standup guy," Goldberg said. "And he fought for the stuff that was right."

Host Sunny Hostin mentioned how Reiner advocated for same-sex marriage, before pivoting to President Donald Trump's post about Reiner's death.
"Don't read it," Goldberg urged. "Just tell them that it's there."

"He watched news," Navarro said. "He knew everything that was going on at the same time that he was making brilliant film work. He was also deeply engaged. There wasn't a cause he didn't care about. He cared about immigrants. He cared about equality and justice. He spoke up in defense of democracy at a time when so many in the media industry, so many with a platform are afraid to speak, he put his money and his mouth where his heart was.
"And for Trump to have put that out today, I'm going to say it," she continued. "Damn it, there's an American family grieving. This is a tragedy, not just for the family, but for all who knew and loved him. And for the president of the United States to make this about him in a way to attack Rob Reiner because he exercised his American right to speak up with what he disagreed with, is shameful, is disgraceful, and out of all the disgusting things that Donald Trump has done, this is right up there."

Goldberg also expressed her disgust at Trump's message.
"I don't understand the man in that White House because he talks so much about Charlie Kirk and caring and suddenly this is what he puts out," she said, referencing the September shooting of the conservative political activist. "Have you no shame, no shame at all? Can you get any lower? I don’t think so."
