Euphoria returned with its third and final season, focusing on the characters five years after the events of the second season. Euphoria season 3 included a plotline in which Sydney Sweeney‘s character, Cassie Howard, debuted on OnlyFans. However, this new direction did not sit well with fans, who called out Sydney for the costumes she wore in the scenes. Creator Sam Levinson stepped forward to defend the actress and her character on the show.

Sam Levinson defends Sydney Sweeney’s Euphoria plot

The new season of Euphoria immediately garnered attention for how it depicted Sydney Sweeney. Her character, Cassie, starts her OnlyFans account in the show. Subsequently, Sweeney can be seen wearing costumes the internet deemed “disgusting.” She has dressed up as a baby and a dog in the series so far, which has generated significant backlash.

Sam Levinson spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about these scenes and the backlash they generated, taking Sweeney’s side in the debate. “[Cassie] has got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor, but what makes the scene is the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming it,” he said. “What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity that we’re able to tie into it so that we’re not too inside of her fantasy or illusion — the gag is to jump out, to break the wall,” the creator added.

While Levinson and even Marcell Rév, the show’s director of photography, pointed to the aesthetic angle of the plot, fans were less than satisfied with Sydney Sweeney for agreeing to the scenes.

Reacting to Sweeney dressing as a baby, one user wrote on X, “Why did this girl accept the role? I mean, you’re worth too much — why be a toy for people like that? Why humiliate yourself so much for a movie?” Another user said, “Guys, it’s not envy, she’s obviously beautiful, nobody’s arguing that. But agreeing to a scene where she’s dressed like a baby pacifier, diaper, and sexualized like that is straight up disturbing. Blame both: the writers for even putting it in, and her for saying yes.”

Euphoria season 3 episode 1 is now streaming on HBO Max.
