Randolph Mantooth, the actor best known for headlining NBC’s *Emergency* in the 1970s, has died.

The actor behind John Roderick “Johnny” Gage on the medical drama died at age 80 in Ventura, Calif., on Thursday after battling several different cancers over the years, his brother Donald told TMZ.

Mantooth played Johnny, a romantically challenged young paramedic, on every episode of *Emergency* across its six seasons between 1972 and 1977. He also starred in several subsequent *Emergency* TV movies that followed the show’s main run. Mantooth also voiced Johnny in the animated spinoff *Emergency +4*.

Born Randy DeRoy Mantooth in Sacramento, Calif., in 1945, Mantooth studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. He lengthened his first name to Randolph as a stage name, and earned acclaim for his performance in a production of *Philadelphia, Here I Come!*

That play opened the door for his screen debut in a 1970 episode of *Matt Lincoln*, followed by a pair of eps of *The Bold Ones: The Senator* that same year. After appearances on shows like *Night Gallery*, *McCloud*, and *Alias Smith and Jones* in the early 1970s, he boarded *Emergency* in 1972.

The popularity of *Emergency* — a spinoff of *Adam-12*, which itself was a spinoff of *Dragnet* — coincided with the widespread adoption of emergency medical services across the United States. Mantooth remained an advocate for emergency personnel for the rest of his career, working alongside organizations like the International Association of Firefighters and the County of Los Angeles Fire Museum Association.

Mantooth later appeared as Alex Masters on over 300 episodes of the ABC soap opera *Loving* between 1987 and 1995, and reprised the role in nearly 200 episodes of the spinoff *The City* in the 1990s.

The actor had stints on several other prominent soaps, portraying Hal Munson in 35 eps of *As the World Turns* and playing Kirk Harmon in 11 episodes of *One Life to Live* in the 2000s.

Mantooth also guested on shows like *Charlie’s Angels*, *Fantasy Island*, *Dallas*, *MacGyver*, *Baywatch*, *General Hospital*, *ER*, and *Criminal Minds*. His final screen performance came in the 2013 horror film *Killer Holiday*, and he appeared in the 2014 doc *Actor? A Documentary*.

Mantooth had been married to Kristen Connors since 2002. He was previously married to Rose Parra from 1978 to 1991. Mantooth is also survived by his brother Donald, his sister Tonya.
