Jennifer Lopez's Office Romance character Jackie Cruz was written specifically for her

Her costar (and co-writer on the film!) Brett Goldstein was prepared to pull the plug on the film if Lopez didn't take the lead role, she said

The Netflix rom-com features an "edgier" take on classic films of the genre, and is even a bit "raunchy" at times, Lopez said

Jennifer Lopez's role in Office Romance was made for her — literally!

On the April 18 episode of Sirius XM's BPM, the singer-actress opened up about her forthcoming film Office Romance, a "raunchy" rom-com about a secret workplace relationship in which she stars opposite Ted Lasso's Brett Goldstein, who also co-wrote the movie.

Lopez, 56, said her leading character, Jackie Cruz, was created specifically with her in mind — so much that Goldstein and co-writer Joe Kelly were prepared to scrap the project altogether if she didn't sign on.

"They sent me the script and they were like, 'We wrote this for you. If you don't do it, we're not even making the movie,' " Lopez recalled. "But it was really funny and me and my partner — Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, my producing partner — really loved it," the Marry Me actress explained.

"And we went, and we did it, and I'm so glad we did," she added. "I'm really excited for people to see it."

Office Romance meets Lopez as Jackie Cruz, a CEO at a major company, as she catches feelings for Daniel Blanchflower (Goldstein), a new employee.

The "fun, raunchy and romantic" dynamic of the film drew her in, Lopez previously told PEOPLE, and she loved the modern take on the movie's humor. Though she was "booked back to back" with other projects, she said, it felt important to make Office Romance work.

"I'm really excited about it," she said on BPM. "It's really funny ... It's kind of a classic rom-com, but it has, like, hard jokes, you know what I mean?"

She added, "It's like a little bit edgier than a normal JLo rom-com in a way, but it has all the DNA of a classic, you know, romantic comedy that you love, that you just kind of really fall in love with the characters and things like that."

Lopez also praised the "amazing supporting cast" of Office Romance, and compared the group to that of Maid in Manhattan for adding excellent dimension alongside the two leads. In addition to Lopez and Goldstein, Office Romance also features Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale, Amy Sedaris and Edward James Olmos.

Office Romance will be available to stream on Netflix on June 5.
