Magnus Carlsen is widely regarded as one of, if not the, greatest chess players of all time.

Carlsen was a child prodigy, though he didn't love chess at first. The Norway-born grandmaster told the Telegraph that he first started studying the game when he was 5 years old, merely to beat his older sister at it. He participated in his first tournament when he was just 8.

Carlsen eventually worked with former world champion Garry Kasparov as a mentor, The Guardian reported, and became a world champion himself in 2013, days before his 23rd birthday.

Despite all of his accomplishments in chess (and the healthy nest egg he built from them), Carlsen views himself relatively humbly.

"I sometimes just find it very surprising that I am the best in the world at something, because I don't consider myself particularly remarkable," he said in Netflix's UNTOLD: Chess Mates. "I know that I am relatively bright, but I'm not a genius, I'm not something amazing."

Carlsen's pristine reputation at the board was challenged in September 2022, when 19-year-old Hans Niemann bested Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup.

UNTOLD: Chess Mates examines the alleged cheating scandal and legal battle that erupted following Niemann's victory — but Carlsen largely takes it in stride now.

He said in Chess Mates with a chuckle, "I only know that when I sit down at the board, I am better than the other guy."

According to The New York Times, Carlsen and his parents established a private entity, Magnus Chess, to manage his chess winnings and earnings when he was 16 years old.

The bulk of Carlsen's fortune came largely from his business Play Magnus, which included an online chess playing site, books, training programs, tournaments and apps. In November 2021, the company was valued at $115 million.

Magnus Chess owned 9% of Play Magnus at the time, giving Carlsen a personal stake of nearly $9 million. At the time, Carlsen's father told The New York Times that his son exceeded their initial goal of him having financial independence "by far."

Despite amassing an estimated net worth of $25 million (and counting), Carlsen told The Guardian in 2020, “It’s really about trying to bring chess to more people. I don’t have any aspirations of being a chess mogul, I just want to [keep] playing — that is what I’m good at.”
