His & Hers stars Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal as a former married couple who get bizarrely reunited when a murder takes place in their hometown

Throughout the Netflix series, several of the characters become prime suspects without a clear culprit until the very end

His & Hers, which is an adaptation of the 2020 Alice Feeney novel, came to Netflix on Jan. 8

Netflix's latest thriller takes viewers through a twisted tale of potential suspects before revealing the murderous mastermind.

His & Hers, which is based on the 2020 Alice Feeney novel by the same name, stars Tessa Thompson as Anna Andrews, a television anchor who ventures to her hometown of Dahlonega, Ga., to report on a woman who was brutally murdered. After arriving to the scene of the crime, she learns that her estranged husband, Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), is the detective in charge of the case.

As the series unfolds, viewers learn that both Anna and Jack are connected to the crimes. Per the show's description, the former couple "compete to solve a murder case in which each believes the other is a prime suspect." The limited series hit Netflix on Jan. 8.

Both Jack and Anna are forced to face their troubled pasts and buried secrets in order to get to to the truth, but in true murder mystery fashion, things aren't always what they seem. In addition to Thompson and Bernthal, the series also stars Sunita Mani as Priya, Crystal Fox as Alice, Pablo Schreiber as Richard, Rebecca Rittenhouse as Lexy, Marin Ireland as Zoe, Chris Bauer as Clyde, Jamie Tisdale as Rachel and Poppy Liu as Helen.

Here's everything to know about the ending of His & Hers — including the motive of the murderer.

Although His & Hers initially appears to be about a sole murder, the town of Dahlonega gets turned upside down when a total of three women are brutally killed. The first crime, which causes Anna to return home, is the grizzly death of Rachel — Anna's former high school friend who had an affair with Jack.

While Jack and Anna investigate the murder, they're shocked when another one of Anna's former friends, Helen, is brutally murdered in her office. Her third high school friend, Zoe — who is also Jack's sister — also later shows up dead.

Anna and Jack put the pieces together that all three crimes are connected by the disturbing messages displayed on their deceased bodies, as well as the same friendship bracelet attached to each victim. Both Anna and Jack each quickly become suspects themselves due to their complicated relationships with each victim, but it eventually seems as though Anna is actually the next person in danger.

However, the finale takes a shocking turn when it's revealed that Anna never had to fear for her life, because her elderly mother, Alice, was the person behind all the murders.

At the same time that the murders are unfolding, a traumatic incident from Anna's past resurfaces as a possible motive. When she was a teenager, Anna was close friends with Rachel, Zoe and Helen and invited the three of them — as well as outsider Catherine Kelly (Astrid Rotenberry) — to her intimate 16th birthday.

Unfortunately, the party became anything but celebratory when Rachel, Zoe and Helen lured Anna and Catherine into the woods and planned for them to get sexually assaulted. While Anna was attacked, Catherine escaped.

Although Anna kept the violent incident to herself for years, her mother later found out about what happened to her daughter. Alice eventually reveals that she meticulously planned all the women's murders to seek revenge for what they did to Anna all those years ago.

In her final act of vengeance, Alice framed Catherine — who rebranded to Lexy and became an unrecognizable news anchor — for the murders before she was shot by Jack's partner and could never tell the true story.

As the series plays out, both Anna and Jack become suspects due to their complicated pasts with each victim. Jack was having an affair with Rachel — who was married to wealthy businessman Clyde — and Anna and Rachel had a major falling out after the 16th birthday party.

"Once the other murders happen ... I thought it was possible that Anna could have been the killer," Bernthal told Tudum.

Although both Jack and Anna seem like they have the means and motives at various points of the series, neither one of them committed any of the murders.

In Alice's last act of revenge, she framed Lexy (a.k.a. Catherine Kelly) for Rachel, Zoe and Helen's murders. During the final episode, Anna is brought to a secluded lake house by her cameraman, Richard, who is married to Lexy.

However, once they arrive, Anna looks at photos in the home and realizes that Lexy was her former friend all along. As it turns out, Lexy/Catherine is still upset with Anna from the incident that took place in the woods all those years ago and is convinced that Anna was also in on the plan to trick them into getting assaulted.

Even though Anna promises she had no idea about the plan, they get into a fight. At this point, Anna becomes convinced that Lexy/Catherine is the murderer seeking revenge. Luckily, Jack and Priya come just in time to save Anna, and Priya shoots and kills Lexy/Catherine.

Jack, Anna and the other investigators come to the agreement that Lexy/Catherine was the killer, and since she's dead, she cannot argue otherwise. However, in an unlikely twist, Lexy/Catherine didn't kill any of her friends, and Alice had planned to frame her the entire time.

Although Lexy/Catherine didn't kill any of her high school enemies, she isn't totally innocent. When she was a teenager, she struggled with her sister, Andrea (Savanna Gann), bullying her.

After one particular fat-shaming incident, Catherine took her sister's inhaler and emptied the medication before they went on a boat trip. Andrea ultimately suffered an asthma attack and died. Although Catherine was responsible for her sister's death, she may have not been acting with "malicious" intent, director William Oldroyd theorized.

"Sometimes we do things and don’t consider the consequences. So you may think at the moment, ‘Yeah, I’m going to expire her inhaler,’ ” Oldroyd told Tudum. “You don’t think on that day she’s going to have an asthma attack out in a lake where she can’t get rescued and then die. It’s unfortunate. But I don’t think it’s any more malicious than some of the spiteful things we do to our siblings when they really piss us off.”

It's later revealed that Catherine/Lexy told her secret to Rachel, and she and Helen had used that information to try to blackmail her. In addition to the incident in the woods, the blackmailing further made Catherine/Lexy the perfect suspect.

Anna and Jack were initially married for years and had a daughter together, but they got divorced after the loss of their infant daughter, Charlotte Alice Harper. The baby died while Alice was watching her a year prior to the murders from unknown causes relating to "crib death."

Even though they split up, both Anna and Jack still have feelings for each other, no matter how hard they try and move on.

The final few scenes of His & Hers flashes to a year after the murders and shows that Anna and Jack are, indeed, back together. The couple moved into a home together in Atlanta and have adopted Jack's niece, Meg (Ellie Rose Sawyer) — whose mother, Zoe, was killed in the string of murders.

Anna is pregnant and back anchoring the news, while Jack returns to the Atlanta police department. She has also prioritized her relationship with Alice after having previously left her hometown for the big city.

How does His & Hers end?

Just when Anna and Jack seem to be a happy family again, Anna learns the devastating truth that her mother — not Lexy — was the person who commited the murders.

Anna finds handwritten notes that Alice wrote in which she confessed to the murders and explained her motive. Alice wrote that once she found out that those girls had schemed to assault her daughter, she needed to get revenge.

In order to fully get away with the crimes, Alice faked having dementia, so no one would ever suspect her. She also admitted in the letters that while revenge was a main motivating factor, she also missed having Anna and Jack around her all the time and felt she needed to commit the murders to get her family back.

Alice wrote that killing Rachel brought Anna back to Dahlonega, killing Helen made her stay there longer and killing Zoe gave Anna a chance to have a family again — referring to Zoe's daughter Meg being orphaned by the murder.

The revelation leaves Anna with another major secret that she must decide whether or not to tell Jack in the midst of their new, happy life together. Since Jack's sister was one of the victims and he was the lead investigator on the case, it may mean that he can never know the truth.

The series eerily ends with Anna and Alice making eye contact and Alice smiling back at her.
